ROHS refers for the Restriction of Hazards Substances. Restriction of Hazardous Substances (ROHS) is a directive and legally binding German and EU law, in practice in most western countries. It puts restriction on the use of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium (Cr-VI), polybrominated biphenyl (PBB), and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE). Although many such restrictions came into effect in 2002 with the goal to eventually ban such substances entirely, there is no universal phasing out period or timeline of any kind at present. The objective of this directive is to restrict the use of six hazardous substances within electronic and electrical equipment.

All applicable products that are sold in the EU markets must achieve compliance with ROHS directive by July 1, 2006. The mandatory requirement of ROHS directive is applicable for the European Union
